The average graduation rates for the former Ypsilanti and Willow Run high schools before the consolidation, was 59.7% and 45.08%, respectively. Compared to other schools, we have one of the lowest graduation rates in our area. But team 470 is proud to say that 100 percent of our students graduated from high school. Without FIRST and Team 470, many of our students would not have succeeded in high school.
"I think an education is not only important, it is the most important thing you can do with your life."
Grade point avenge
We calculated an average of our team members' overall GPA for this year. The cumulative GPA of 470 students is 3.372 on the 4.0 GPA scale. This number has more of an impact to us than it might seem to others. Most members of Team 470 came to the team with lower grades and scores in school. This is something that we could not ignore! Coming together to find a solution, we decided to have tutoring sessions for those who needed it in any subject. A mandatory high grade point average is no longer a problem for us! Students are able to work together with mentors and older team members to work on homework and other assignments. Students who originally struggled in their school subjects are able to get the help they need and are eventually able to help other students who need help.
Team 470 greatly values Community Service for two reasons. First, Community Service helps spread and promote the message of FIRST to people in our community. Second, it teaches our members the values of volunteering with a nonprofit, in other words working just for the greater good of others. After a long summer of volunteer work we put together a log that shows how many students we had for each event and the hours he/she completed. Thanks to logging of all of this information, we found out that we completed about 381 hours of volunteer work altogether, and that was in one summer alone. This does not include any of the open houses and robot demos our team is involved with throughout the school year or any volunteer work members do on their own.
